"A Faith That Handles Difficulties" with Pastor Rick Warren subtitles

- Hi, everybody, I'm Rick Warren, pastor at Saddleback Church and authorof "The Purpose Driven Life" and speakeron the "Daily Hope" program.Thank you for tuning into this broadcast. You know, this week here in Orange County, California, the government announced that they were banningall meetings of any kind, of any sizeuntil the end of the month. So welcome to Saddleback Church in the home.I'm glad you're here. And I'm gonna be teaching you by a videobetween now and whenever this COVID-19 crisis ends.So welcome to Saddleback Church in the home. And I wanna invite you to follow me every week,be a part of these worship services together. We're gonna have music and worship together, and I'll be delivering a word from God's Word. You know, as I thought about this,by the way, first I need to tell you.I figured that they were gonna cancel us meeting. And so this week, I had the Saddleback studiomoved to my garage.I'm actually taping this in my garage. My skeletal tech crew.Come on in, guys, say hi to everybody.(laughs)They helped move it over here and set it all upso that we could talk to you on a weekly basis. Now, as I thought about what we should coverduring this COVID-19 crisis,I immediately thought of the book of James. The book of James is a very small booknear the end of the New Testament. But it is so practical and it is so helpful, and I call this book a faith that works when life doesn't.And I thought if anything is needed right now,is we need a faith that works when life doesn't.Because it's not working very well right now.And so today, this week, we're gonna begina journey together that's gonna encourage youthrough this crisis. And I don't want you to miss any of these messages.Because the book of James actually covers 14 majorbuilding blocks of life, 14 key issues of life,14 areas that every single one of youhave already had to deal with in your life, and you're gonna have to deal with in the future. For instance, in chapter one of James, let me just give you a little overview of the book. It's only four chapters.Chapter one, it first talks about difficulties. And we're gonna talk about that today. What is God's purpose for your problems? Then it talks about choices. How do you make up your mind? How do you know when to stay, when to go?How do you know what to do, how do you make decisions? And then it talks about temptation. And we'll look at how do you defeat the common temptationsin your life that seem to keep causing you to fail. And then it talks about guidance. And it talks about how we can be blessed by the Bible. Not just read it, but be blessed by it.That's all in chapter one.And we'll look at those in the weeks ahead.Chapter two talks about relationships. We're gonna look at how do you treat people right. And with people having to stay home, all in the family together, kids and moms and dads, and people are gonna get on each others' nerves. That's gonna be an important message on relationships. Then it talks about faith. How do you really trust God when you don't feel like itand when things are going the wrong direction? That's all in chapter two.Chapter three, we're gonna talk about conversations. The power of conversation. And this is one of the most important passagesin the Bible on how do you manage your mouth. That's important whether we're in a crisis or not.And then it talks about friendship. And it gives us very practical informationon how do you build wise friendshipsand avoid unwise friendships. That's chapter three.Chapter four is on conflict. And in chapter four, we talk abouthow do you avoid arguments. And that'll be real helpful. As tensions rise and frustrations grow,as people are out of work, how do you avoid arguments? And then it talks about judging others. How do you quit playing God?That would cause a lot of peace in our livesif we could do that. And then it talks about the future. How do you plan for the future? That's all in chapter four. Now, in the last chapter, chapter five, I told youthere were four chapters, there are actuallyfive chapters in James. We're gonna talk about money. And it talks about how to be wise with your wealth. And then we're gonna look at patience. What do you do when you're waiting on God?The most difficult room to sit inis in the waiting room when you're in a hurry and God's not.And then we're gonna look at prayer, which is the last message we'll look at.How do you pray about your problems? The Bible says there's a way to pray and get answers, and there's a way to not pray. And we're gonna be looking at that. Now today, we're just gonna look at the first six versesof the book of James. If you don't have a Bible, then I want you to downloadoff of this website the outline, the teaching notes, because all the verses we're gonna look atare there on your outline.James chapter one, the first six verses. And the Bible says this when it talks abouthaving to deal with your problems.First, James 1:1 says this.James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,to the 12 tribes scattered among the nations, greetings. Now, let me pause here for a minute and saythis is the most understated introductionof any book in the Bible.Because you know who James was?He was the half-brother of Jesus. What do you mean by that?It means he was Mary and Joseph's son.Jesus was only Mary's son.He wasn't Joseph's son 'cause God was the father of Jesus. But the Bible tells us that Mary and Josephhad many children later on, and even gives us their names.James was not a Christian. He was not a follower of Christ. He didn't believe his half-brother was the Messiahduring Jesus' entire ministry. He was a skeptic. And you'd figure that, younger brother not believingin an older brother, well, that would be pretty plain. What made James a believer in Jesus Christ? The Resurrection. When Jesus came back from death and walked aroundfor another 40 days and James saw him,he became a believer and later became the leaderat the Church of Jerusalem. So if anybody had a right to drop names, it's this guy.He could've said, James, the guy who grew up with Jesus.James, the half-brother of Jesus.James, Jesus' best friend growing up.Those kind of things, but he doesn't.He simply says James, a servant of God.He doesn't pull rank, he doesn't promote his pedigree. But then in verse two, he starts getting intothis very first issue of God's purpose in your problems.Let me read it to you.He says, when all kinds of trialscrowd into your lives, don't resent them as intruders, but welcome them as friends.Realize they come to test your faith, and to produce in you the quality of endurance. But let that process go on until that enduranceis fully developed, and you will become a personof mature character and integritywith no weak spots. That's the Phillips translationof James chapter one, verses two to six. Now, he says when all kinds of trials come into your lifeand they crowd into your life, he said, don't resent themas intruders, welcome them as friends. He says, you got problems, be happy. You got problems, rejoice. You got problems, smile. Now, I know what you're thinking. You go, are you kidding me?Why should I be happy about COVID-19?Why should I welcome these trials in my life? How is that possible? The key to this entire attitude of maintaininga positive attitude in the middle of a crisisis the word realize, it's the word realize. He said, when all these kind of trialscrowd into your lives, don't resent them as intruders, but welcome them as friends, and realize, realize, they come to test your faith. And then he goes on, what it's gonna produce in their lives. What he's saying here is that your success in handlingthe weeks that are ahead of us in this COVID-19 pandemicthat's now all around the world, and as more and morenations are shutting down, and they're shutting downrestaurants and they're shutting down stores, and they're shutting down schools, and they're shutting down churches, and they're shutting down any placewhere people are gathering, and like here in Orange County, where we're not allowed to meet with anybody this month. He says, your success in handling these problemswill be determined by your understanding.By your understanding. And by your attitude towards those problems. It's what you realize, it's what you know. Now, the first thing in this passage I want you to realizeis that God gives us four reminders about problems. You might wanna write these down.Four reminders about problems in your life, which include the crisis we're going through right now.Number one, he says first, problems are inevitable.Problems are inevitable. Now, how is he saying that?He says, when all kinds of trials come.He doesn't say if all kinds of trials come, he says when. You can count on it.This is not heaven where everything is perfect. This is Earth where everything is broken. And he's saying you will have problems, you will have difficulties, you can count on it,you can buy stock in it.Now, this is not something that James says alone. All through the Bible it says it.Jesus said in the world you will have trialsand temptations, and you will have tribulation. He said you're going to have problems in life.So why are we surprised when we have problems?Peter says don't be surprisedwhen you go through fiery trials.Said don't don't act like it's something new.Everybody goes through hard times.Life is difficult. This is not heaven, this is Earth.Nobody's immune, nobody's isolated, nobody's insulated, nobody's exempt. He says you're gonna have problemsbecause they are inevitable. You know, I remember one time when I was in college. Many years ago, I was going throughsome really difficult times. And I started praying, I said, "God, give me patience."And instead of the trials getting better, they got worse. And then I said, "God, I really need patience,"and the problems got more worse. And then I said, "God, I really need patience,"and they got even more worse. What was going on?Well, finally I realized that after about six months,I was a lot more patient than when I started out, that the way God was teaching me patiencewas through those difficulties. Now, problems are not some kind of elective coursethat you have a choice to take in life. No, they're required, you can't opt out of them.In order to graduate from the school of life, you're gonna go through the school of hard knocks. You're gonna go through problems, they are inevitable. That's what the Bible says.Second thing the Bible says about problems is this.Problems are variable, that means they're not all the same. You don't get the same problem one after another. You get a lot of different ones. Not only do you get 'em, but you get different ones.He says when you trial, when you have problems of all kinds. You might circle that if you're taking notes. When all kinds of trials come into your life. You know, I'm a gardener, and I once did a study, and I discovered that the government herein the United States has classified205 different kinds of weeds.I think 80% of them grow in my garden. (laughs)I often think that when I'm growing vegetables,I should charge admission to Warren's Weed Farm. But there are many kinds of of weeds, and there are many kinds of trials, there are many kinds of problems. They come in all sizes, they come in all shapes. There are more than 31 flavors. This word here, all kinds, where it saysthere are all kinds of trials in your life,it actually in the Greek means multicolored. In other words, there are a lot of shades of stressin your life, would you agree with that? There are a lot of shades of stress. They don't all look the same. There's financial stress, there's relational stress, there's health stress, there's physical stress, there's time stress. He's saying that they're all different colors. But if you out and you buy a car and you wanta custom color, then you have to wait for it.And then when it's made, then you get your custom color. That's actually the word that's used here. It's a custom color, multicolored trials in your life.God allows them for a reason. Some of your problems are actually custom made. Some of them we just all experienced together, like this one, COVID-19.But he's saying problems are variable. And what I mean by that is they vary in intensity. In other words, how hard they come. They vary in frequency, and that is how long.We don't know how long this is gonna last.We don't know how hard it's gonna get.I saw a sign the other day that said,"Into every life some rain must fall,"but this is ridiculous." (laughs)And I think that that's the waya lot of people are feeling right now. This is ridiculous.Problems are inevitable and they are variable. The third things James says so we're not shockedis problems are unpredictable. They're unpredictable. He says when trials crowd into your life,if you're taking notes, circle that phrase. They crowd into your life.See, no problem ever comes when you need itor when you don't need it.It just comes when it wants to come. That's part of the reason it's a problem.Problems come at the most inopportune time.Have you ever felt like a problemcame into your life, you go, not now.Really, like now? Here at Saddleback Church, we were in a major campaigndreaming about the future. And all of a sudden the coronavirus hits. And I'm going, not now.(chuckles) Not now.Have you ever had a flat tire when you were late? You don't get a flat tire when you got plenty of time. You're in a hurry to go somewhere. It's like the baby wets on your new dressas you're walking out for an important evening engagement.Or you split your pants before you speak. That actually happened to me one timeon a Sunday a long time ago. Some people, they're so impatient, they can't wait for a revolving door. They've just gotta, they gotta do it,they've gotta do it now, they gotta do it now.I remember many years ago I was in Japan, and I was standing at a subway waiting for the subwayto arrive, and when it opened, the doors opened, and a young Japanese man immediatelyprojectile vomited on me as I was standing there. And I thought, why me, why now? They are unpredictable, they come when you don't need 'em.You can seldom predict the problems in your life. Now notice, it says when all kinds of trials, when, they're inevitable, all kinds, they're variable, crowd into your life, that's they're unpredictable,he says don't resent them as intruders. What is he saying here?Well, I'm gonna explain this more in detail. But here's the fourth thing the Bible says about problems.Problems are purposeful.Problems are purposeful.God has a purpose in everything.Even the bad things that happen in our life,God can bring good out of them.God doesn't have to cause every problem. Most of the problems we cause ourselves.People say, why do people get sick?Well, one reason is we don't do what God tells us to do.If we ate what God tells us to eat,if we slept like God tells us to get rest,if we exercise as God tells us to exercise,if we didn't allow negative emotions into our liveslike God tells, if we obeyed God,we wouldn't have most of our problems.Studies have shown that about 80% of the health problemsin this country, in America, are caused by what are calledchronic lifestyle choices. In other words, we just don't do the right thing. We don't do the healthy thing. We often do the self-destructive thing. But what he's saying is here, problems are purposeful. He says when you encounter problems, realize they come to produce.Circle that phrase, they come to produce.Problems can be productive. Now, they're not automatically productive. This COVID virus, if I don't respond in the right day,it won't produce anything great in my life. But if I respond in the right way, even the most negative things in my lifecan produce growth and benefit and blessing,in your life and in my life. They come to produce. He's saying here that suffering and stressand sorrow, yes, and even sickness can accomplish somethingof value if we let it.It's all in our choice, it's all in our attitude.God uses the difficulties in our lives. You say, well, how does he do that? How does God use difficulties and problems in our life?Well, thanks for asking, because the next passageor the next part of the verses saythat God uses them three ways.Three ways, God uses problems in your life three ways.First, problems test my faith. Now, your faith is like a muscle.A muscle can't be strengthened unless it's tested, unless it's stretched, unless it's put under pressure. You don't develop strong muscles by doing nothing. You develop strong muscles by stretching themand strengthening them and testing themand pushing them to the limit. So he's saying problems come to test my faith. He says realize that they come to test your faith. Now, that word testing right there, that is a termin the Bible times that was used for refining metals. And what you would do is you'd take a precious metallike silver or gold or something else, and you would put it in a big pot, and you would heat itto extremely high temperatures, why?In the high temperatures, all of the impurities are burned off.And the only thing that's left is the pure goldor the pure silver. That's the Greek word here for testing. It's the refining fire of when God puts the heat onand allows that in our lives,it burns off stuff that isn't important. You know what's gonna happen in the next few weeks?Stuff that we all thought was really important,we're gonna realize, hmm, I got alongjust fine without that. It's gonna reorder our priorities, because things are going to change. Now, the classic example of how problems test your faithare the stories that are about Job in the Bible. There's a whole book about Job.You know, Job was the wealthiest man in the Bible, and in a single day, he lost everything. He lost all his family, he lost all his wealth,he lost all his friends, terrorists attacked his family,he got a dreaded, very painful chronic diseasethat could not be cured.Okay, he's terminal. And yet God was testing his faith. And God later restores him actually doublewhat he had before he went through the big test.At one time I read a quote somewhere a long time agothat said people are like tea bags. You don't really know what's in 'emuntil you drop 'em in hot water. And then you can see what's really inside them.Have you ever had one of those hot water days? You ever had one of those hot water weeks or months? We're in a hot water situation right now.And what's gonna come out of you is what's inside of you. It's like a toothpaste. If I have a toothpaste tube and I push it,what's gonna come out?You say, well, toothpaste. No, not necessarily. It could say toothpaste on the outside, but it could have marinara sauceor peanut butter or mayonnaise on the inside. What's gonna come out when it's put under pressureis whatever's in it.And in the days ahead as you deal with the COVID virus, what's gonna come out of you is what's inside of you.And if you're filled with bitterness, that'll come out.And if you're filled with frustration, that'll come out.And if you're filled with anger or worry or guiltor shame or insecurity, that's gonna come out.If you're filled with fear that's, whatever is inside of youis what's gonna come out when the pressure is put on you.And that's what he's saying here, that problems test my faith. You know, years ago, I met an old guy just reallyin a conference many years ago back in the East.I think was Tennessee. And he, this old guy told me how getting laid offwas the greatest benefit in his life. And I said, "Okay, I wanna hear this story."Tell me all about it."And what it was is he had workedat a sawmill all of his life. He'd been a sawmiller all of his life. But one day during an economic downturn, his boss walked in and suddenly announced, "You're fired."And all of his expertise went out the door. And he was laid off at 40 years of age with a wifeand a family and no other job opportunities around him,and there was a recession going on at that time. And he was discouraged, and he was fearful. Some of you may feel that way right now.You may have already been laid off.Maybe you're fearing you will belaid off during this crisis. And he was pretty depressed, he was pretty fearful. He said, I wrote this down, he said, "I felt like"my world had caved in the day that I was fired."But when I went home, I told my wife what happened,"and she asked, 'So what are you gonna do now?'"And I said, well then since I got fired,"I'm gonna do what I've always wanted to do."Become a builder."I'm gonna mortgage our home"and I'm gonna go into the building business."And he told me, "You know, Rick, my first venture"was the construction of two small motels."That's what he did.But he said, "Within five years, I was a multi-millionaire."That man's name, the man that I was talking to,was Wallace Johnson, and the business that he startedafter getting fired was called Holiday Inns.Holiday Inns.Wallace told me, "Rick, today, if I could locate"the man who fired me, I would sincerely"thank him for what he did."At that time when it happened, I didn't understandwhy I was fired, why I was laid off.But only later could I see that it was God's unerringand wondrous plan to get me into the career of his choosing.Problems are purposeful. They have a purpose.Realize they come to produce, and one of the first thingsthey produce is greater faith, they test your faith.Number two, here's the second benefit of problems.Problems develop my endurance. They develop my endurance. That's the next part of the phrase, it saysthese problems come to develop endurance. They develop endurance in your life. What are the result of problems in your life?Staying power. It's literally the ability to handle pressure.Today we call it resilience. The ability to bounce back. And one of the greatest qualities every child needs to learnand every adult needs to learn is resilience.Because everybody falls, everybody stumbles, everybody goes through tough times, everybody gets sick at different times.Everybody has failures in their life. It's how do you handle pressure.Endurance, you keep on keeping on and hanging on.Well, how do you learn to do that? How do you learn to handle pressure?Through experience, that's the only way.You don't learn to handle pressure in a textbook. You don't learn how to handle pressure in a seminar. You learn to handle pressure by being put under pressure. And you don't know what's in youuntil you've actually been put in that situation. In the second year of Saddleback Church, 1981,I went through a period of depressionwhere every single week I wanted to resign. And I wanted to quit every Sunday afternoon. And yet, I was going through a difficult time in my life, and yet I would put one foot in front of the otheras God, not get me to build a great church, but God, get me through this week. And I just would not give up.I'm so glad I didn't give up.But I'm even more glad that God didn't give up on me.Because that was a test. And during that year of trial, I developed some spiritualand relational and emotional and mental strengththat allowed me years later to juggle all kinds of ballsand handle enormous amounts of stress in the public eyebecause I went through that yearof flat out difficulty, one after another. You know, America has had a love affair with convenience. We love convenience. In the days and the weeks ahead in this crisis, there are gonna be a lot of things that are inconvenient.Inconvenient.And what are we gonna do with ourselveswhen everything isn't comfortable, when you have to just keep on keeping onwhen you don't feel like keeping on.You know, the goal of a triathlon or the goal of a marathonis really not about speed, how quickly you get there,it's more about endurance.Do you finish the race? How do you prepare for those kind of things?Only by going through them.So when you are stretched in the days ahead, don't worry about it, don't worry about it.Problems develop my endurance.Problems have a purpose, they're purposeful. The third thing that James tells us about the problemswe go through is that problems mature my character. And he says this in verse four of James chapter one.He says but, let the process go onuntil you become people of mature characterand integrity with no weak spots.Wouldn't you like to have that?Wouldn't you like to hear people say, you know, that woman has no weak spots in her character. That man, that guy has no weak spots in his character. How do you get that kind of mature character?Let the process go on until you become people, men and women, of mature characterand integrity with no weak spots. You know, there was a famous study done many, many years ago in Russia that I remember writing down, and it was on the effect of how different living conditionsaffected the longevity or the lifespan of different animals. And so they put some animals in easy living, and they put some other animals in more difficultand harsh environments. And the scientists discovered that the animalsthat were placed in the comfortableand the easy environments, conditions, those living conditions, actually became weaker.Because the conditions were so easy, they became weakerand more susceptible to sickness. And those who were in comfortable conditions died soonerthan those who were allowed to experiencethe normal hardships of life.Isn't that interesting? What's true of animals I'm sure is trueof our character, too.And in the Western culture particularly in modern world,we've had it so easy in so many ways.Living lives of convenience.God's number one goal in your lifeis to make you like Jesus Christ in character. To think like Christ, to act like Christ,to live like Christ, to love like Christ,to be positive like Christ. And if that's true, and the Bible says this over and over, then God's gonna take you through the same thingsthat Jesus went through to grow your character. You say, well, what is Jesus like?Jesus is love and joy and peace and patience and kindness, the fruit of the Spirit, all those things. And how does God produce those?By putting us in the opposite situation. We learn patience when we're tempted to be impatient. We learn love when we're put around unlovely people. We learn joy in the middle of grief. We learn to wait and have that kind of patiencewhen we have to wait.We learn kindness when we're tempted to be selfish. In the days ahead, it's gonna be very temptingto just hunker in a bunker, pull back in,and I said, we're gonna take care of us.Me, myself, and I, my family, us four and no moreand forget about everybody else. But that will shrink your soul.If you will begin to think about other peopleand helping those who are vulnerable, the agedand those with preexisting conditions, and if you will reach out, your soul will grow, your heart will grow, you'll be a better personat the end of this crisis than you were at the start, okay? You see, God, when he wants to build your character,he can use two things. He can use his Word, the truth changes us,and he can use circumstances, which is much more difficult. Now, God would rather use the first way, the Word. But we don't always listen to the Word,so he uses circumstances to get our attention. And it's more difficult, but it's often more effective. Now, you say, well, okay, Rick, I get it,that the problems are variable and they're purposeful, and they're here to test my faith, and they're gonna beall different kinds, and they don't come when I want 'em.And God can use 'em to grow my character and mature my life.So what am I supposed to do?In the next few days and in the weeks and maybe months aheadas we face this coronavirus crisis together, how should I respond to problems in my life? And I'm not just talking about the virus.I'm talking about problems that'll come as a resultof being out of work or kids being at homeor all the other things that are upsetting lifeas it normally has been. How should I respond to the problems of my life?Well, again, James is very specific, and he gives us three very practical, they're radical responses, but they're the right responses. In fact, when I tell you the first one, you're gonna go, you gotta be kidding me.But there are three responses, they all start with R.The first response he says is when you'regoing through tough times, rejoice. You go, are you kidding? That sounds masochistic.I'm not saying rejoice over the problem.Follow me on this just a minute. He says consider it pure joy.Treat these problems as friends. Now, don't misunderstand me.He is not saying fake it.He's not saying put on a plastic smile, pretend that everything's okay and it's not, because it's not.Pollyanna, Little Orphan Annie, the sunwill come out tomorrow, it may not come out tomorrow. He's not saying deny reality, not at all. He's not saying be a masochist.Oh boy, I get to go through pain.God hates pain as much as you do.Oh, I get to suffer, whoopee. And you have this martyr complex, and you know,I only have this spiritual feeling when I feel bad.No, no, no, God doesn't want you to be a martyr.God doesn't want you to havea masochistic attitude toward pain. You know, I remember one time I was going througha really difficult time and a friend was trying to be kindand they said, "You know, Rick, cheer up"because things could be worse."And guess what, they got worse. That was no help at all.I did cheer up and they did get worse.(chuckles)So it's not about a fake Pollyanna positive thinking. If I act enthusiastic, I'll be enthusiastic. No, no, no, no, it's much, much deeper than that.We don't rejoice, listen, we don't rejoice for the problem. We rejoice in the problem, while we are in the problem, there's still a lot of things to rejoice about. Not the problem itself, but the other thingsthat we can rejoice about in the problems. Why can we rejoice even in the problem?'Cause we know there's a purpose for it.Because we know that God will never leave us.Because we know a lot of different things. We know that God has a purpose.Notice he says consider it pure joy.Circle the word consider.Consider means to deliberately make up your mind. You got an attitude adjustmentthat you're gonna have to make here.Is it your choice to rejoice? In Psalm 34 verse one, he saysI will bless the Lord at all times. At all times. And he says I will. It's a choice of the will, it's a decision. It's a commitment, it's a choice. Now, you're gonna go through this months aheadwith either a good attitude or a bad attitude. If your attitude is bad, you're gonna make yourselfand everybody else around you miserable. But if your attitude is good, it's your choice to rejoice. You say, let's look on the bright side.Let's find the things that we can thank God for.And let's realize that even in the bad,God can bring good out of the bad.So do an attitude adjustment.I'm not gonna be bitter in this crisis.I'm gonna be better in this crisis.I'm gonna choose, it's my choice to rejoice.Okay, number two, the second R is request. And that is ask God for wisdom. This is what you wanna do anytime you're in a crisis. You wanna ask God for wisdom.Last week, if you listened to last week's message, and if you missed it, go back online and watch that messageon making it through the valley of the virus without fear. It's your choice to rejoice, but then you ask God for wisdom. And you ask God for wisdom and you prayand you pray about your problems.Verse seven says this in James one.If in this process any of you doesn't know how to meetany particular problem, this is out of Phillips translation. If in the process any of you doesn't know how to meetany particular problem you only have to ask Godwho gives generously to all menwithout making them feel guilty. And you may be sure that the necessary wisdomwill be given you. They say why of all things would I ask for wisdomin the middle of a problem? So you learn from it.So you can learn from the problem, that's why you ask for wisdom. It's much more helpful if you'll stop asking why,why is this happening, and start asking what, what do you want me to learn? What do you want me to become? How can I grow from this? How can I become a better woman? How can I become a better man through this crisis?Yeah, I'm being tested.I'm not gonna worry about the why.Why doesn't really even matter. What matters is what, what am I gonna become, and what am I gonna learn from this situation? And in order to do that, you've gotta ask for wisdom. So he says whenever you need wisdom, just ask God,God's gonna give it to you.So you say, God, I need wisdom as a mom.My kids are gonna be home for the next month.I need wisdom as a dad.How do I lead when our jobs are in jeopardyand I can't work right now?Ask God for wisdom.Don't ask why, but ask what.So first you rejoice, you get a positive attitudeof saying I'm gonna thank God not for the problem, but I'm gonna thank God in the problem.Because God's good even when life sucks. That's why I'm calling this series"A Real Faith that Works When Life Doesn't."When life doesn't work.So I rejoice and I request. The third thing James says to do is relax.Yeah, just kinda chill out, don't get yourselfall in a heap of nerves.Don't get so stressed out you can't do anything.Don't worry about the future.God says I'll take care of you, trust me.You trust God to know what's best. You cooperate with him.You don't short-circuit the situation you're going through. But you just say, God, I'm gonna relax.I'm not gonna doubt.I'm not gonna doubt.I'm gonna trust you in this situation.Verse eight is the last verse we're gonna look at.Well, we'll look at one more in a minute. But verse eight says, but you must ask in sincere faithwithout secret doubts. What are you asking for in sincere faith?Ask for wisdom. And say, God, I need wisdom, and I thank youyou're gonna give me the wisdom.I thank you, you are giving me wisdom.Don't freak out, don't doubt, but take it out to God.You know, the Bible says, earlier when I pointed outthat it said these many kinds of problems. You know, we talk about they're multicolored, many, many kinds of problems. That word in Greek, many kinds of problem,is the same word that's covered in First Peterchapter four, verse four that saidGod has many kinds of grace to give you.God's many kinds of grace. It's the same multicolored, multifeatured, like a diamond. What is he saying there? For every problem that you have, there's a grace from God that's available. For every many kind of trial and tribulationand difficulty, there is a kind of grace and mercyand power that God wants to give youto match that particular problem. You need grace for this, you need grace for that, you need grace for this.God says my grace is as multifeaturedas the problems that you're facing. So what am I saying?I'm saying that all the problems that are in your life, including this COVID crisis, the devil means to defeat you with these problems. But God means to develop you through these problems. He wants to defeat you, Satan, but God wants to develop you. Now, the problems that come into your lifedon't automatically make you a better person.A lot of people become bitter people from 'em.It doesn't automatically make you a better person. It's your attitude that makes the difference. And that's where I wanna give you another thing to remember.Number four, the fourth thing to rememberwhen you're going through problems is to rememberthe promises of God.Remember the promises of God.That's down in verse 12.Let me read you this promise.James chapter one, verse 12.Blessed is the person who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test,he will receive the crown of life that God has promised, there's the word, to those who love him.Let me read it again.I want you to listen to it very closely.Blessed is the person who perseveres under trial, who handles the difficulties, like the situation we're in right now.Blessed will be the person who endures, who perseveres, who trusts God, who keeps believing under trial, because when he has stood the test, coming outon the backside, this trial is not gonna last. There's an end to it.You'll come out at the other end of the tunnel. You will receive the crown of life.Well, I don't even know all what that means, but it's good. The crown of life that God has promisedto those who love him. It's your choice to rejoice. It's your choice to trust the wisdom of Godinstead of doubting.Ask God for wisdom to help you from your situation. And then ask God for the faith to endure. And say, God, I'm not gonna give up.This too shall pass.Somebody was once asked, what's your favoriteverse of the Bible?Said, it came to pass. And so why do you like that verse?Because when problems come, I know they didn't come to stay. They came to pass.(chuckles)And that's true in this particular situation. It's not coming to stay, it's coming to pass. Now, I wanna close by this thought.A crisis doesn't just create problems. It often reveals them, it often reveals them. This crisis can reveal some cracks in your marriage. This crisis can reveal some cracksin your relationship to God.This crisis can reveal some cracks in your lifestyle, that you're way pushing yourself too hard. And so be willing to let God speak to youabout what needs to change in your life, all right?I want you to think about this this week, and let me give you some practical steps, okay?Practical steps, number one, I want youto encourage somebody else to listen to this message. Will you do that? Will you pass this link on and send it to a friend? If this has encouraged you, pass it on,and be an encourager this week.Everybody around you needs encouragement during this crisis. So send 'em a link. Two weeks ago when we had church in our campuses,at Lake Forest and all of our other campuses of Saddleback, about 30,000 people showed up at church. But this last week when we had to cancel servicesand we all had to watch online, I said, everybody go to your small group and invite your neighborsand invite your friends to your small group,we had 181,000ISPs of our homes connected into the service. That means maybe a half a million peoplewatched last week's message.A half a million people or more. Why, because you told somebody else to watch. And I wanna encourage you to be a witness of good newsthis week in a world that desperately needs good news.People need to hear this.Send a link.I believe we could encourage a million people this weekif we would all pass on the message, okay?Number two, if you're in a small group, we're not gonnabe able to meet, at least this month, that's for sure. And so I would encourage you to set up a virtual meeting. You can have an online group. How do you do that?Well, there are products out there like Zoom. You want to check that out, Zoom, it's free. And you can get on there and tell everybody to get Zoomon their phone or on their computer, and you can connect six or eight or 10 people, and you can have your group this week on Zoom. And you can see each other face, like Facebook Live,or it's like some of the others, you know, what's on the iPhone when you look at FaceTime.Well, you can't do that with a big group, but you can do it with one person. And so encourage each other face to face through technology. We now have technology that was not available. So check out Zoom for a small group virtual group. And actually here onlineyou can get some information, too.Number three, if you're not in a small group,I'll help you get into an online group this week, I will. All you need to do is email me,PastorRick@saddleback.com.PastorRick@saddleback, one-word, S-A-D-D-L-E-B-A-C-K,saddleback.com, and I'll get you connectedto an online group, all right? Then make sure if you're a part of Saddleback Churchto read your daily newsletter that I'm sending outevery day during this crisis. It's called "Saddleback at Home."It's got tips, it's got encouraging messages,it's got news that you can use.A very practical thing. We wanna stay in touch with you every day.Get "Saddleback at Home."If I don't have your email address, then you're not getting it.And you can email me your email addressto PastorRick@saddleback.com, and I'll put you on the list, and you'll get the daily connection, the daily "Saddleback in the Home" newsletter.I just wanna close before I prayby saying again how much I love you.I've been praying for you every day,and I'm gonna keep on praying for you.We will get through this together. This is not the end of the story.God is still on his throne, and God is gonna use thisto grow your faith, to bring people to faith. And who knows what's gonna happen. We could have a spiritual revival out of all thisbecause people often turn to Godwhen they're going through tough times.Let me pray for you.Father, I want to thank you for everybodywho's listening right now.May we live the message of James chapter one,the first six or seven verses.May we learn that problems come, they're gonna happen, they're variable, they're purposeful, and that you're gonnause them for good in our lives if we'll trust you.Help us to not doubt.Help us to rejoice, to request, Lord, and to remember your promises. And I pray for everybody that they'll have a healthy week.In Jesus' name, amen.God bless you, everybody.Pass this onto somebody else.

<text sub="clublinks" start="1.34" dur="1.42">- Hi, everybody, I'm Rick Warren,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2.76" dur="1.6">pastor at Saddleback Church and author</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="4.36" dur="2.58">of "The Purpose Driven Life" and speaker</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="6.94" dur="2.71">on the "Daily Hope" program.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="9.65" dur="2.53">Thank you for tuning into this broadcast.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="12.18" dur="3.59">You know, this week here in Orange County, California,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="15.77" dur="2.47">the government announced that they were banning</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="18.24" dur="4.19">all meetings of any kind, of any size</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="22.43" dur="1.46">until the end of the month.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="23.89" dur="2.81">So welcome to Saddleback Church in the home.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="26.7" dur="1.41">I'm glad you're here.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="28.11" dur="5">And I'm gonna be teaching you by a video</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="33.31" dur="4.59">between now and whenever this COVID-19 crisis ends.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="37.9" dur="2.12">So welcome to Saddleback Church in the home.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="40.02" dur="3.34">And I wanna invite you to follow me every week,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="43.36" dur="2.25">be a part of these worship services together.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="45.61" dur="2.91">We're gonna have music and worship together,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="48.52" dur="2.44">and I'll be delivering a word from God's Word.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="50.96" dur="3.01">You know, as I thought about this,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="53.97" dur="2.15">by the way, first I need to tell you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="56.12" dur="3.84">I figured that they were gonna cancel us meeting.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="59.96" dur="3.6">And so this week, I had the Saddleback studio</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="63.56" dur="1.32">moved to my garage.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="64.88" dur="2.34">I'm actually taping this in my garage.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="67.22" dur="2.46">My skeletal tech crew.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="69.68" dur="1.979">Come on in, guys, say hi to everybody.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="71.659" dur="2.101">(laughs)</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="73.76" dur="3.12">They helped move it over here and set it all up</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="76.88" dur="4.74">so that we could talk to you on a weekly basis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="81.62" dur="3.32">Now, as I thought about what we should cover</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="84.94" dur="3.22">during this COVID-19 crisis,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="88.16" dur="2.98">I immediately thought of the book of James.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="91.14" dur="2.67">The book of James is a very small book</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="93.81" dur="2.15">near the end of the New Testament.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="95.96" dur="3.81">But it is so practical and it is so helpful,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="99.77" dur="5">and I call this book a faith that works when life doesn't.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="105.56" dur="3.67">And I thought if anything is needed right now,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="109.23" dur="4.75">is we need a faith that works when life doesn't.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="113.98" dur="2.86">Because it's not working very well right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="116.84" dur="2.75">And so today, this week, we're gonna begin</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="119.59" dur="3.25">a journey together that's gonna encourage you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="122.84" dur="1.03">through this crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="123.87" dur="3.22">And I don't want you to miss any of these messages.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="127.09" dur="4.1">Because the book of James actually covers 14 major</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="131.19" dur="4.34">building blocks of life, 14 key issues of life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="135.53" dur="3.76">14 areas that every single one of you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="139.29" dur="1.91">have already had to deal with in your life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="141.2" dur="3.17">and you're gonna have to deal with in the future.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="144.37" dur="3.52">For instance, in chapter one of James,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="147.89" dur="1.6">let me just give you a little overview of the book.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="149.49" dur="1.42">It's only four chapters.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="150.91" dur="2.99">Chapter one, it first talks about difficulties.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="153.9" dur="1.77">And we're gonna talk about that today.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="155.67" dur="4.13">What is God's purpose for your problems?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="159.8" dur="1.6">Then it talks about choices.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="161.4" dur="1.62">How do you make up your mind?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="163.02" dur="2.085">How do you know when to stay, when to go?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="165.105" dur="2.335">How do you know what to do, how do you make decisions?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="167.44" dur="2.41">And then it talks about temptation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="169.85" dur="3.29">And we'll look at how do you defeat the common temptations</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="173.14" dur="3.24">in your life that seem to keep causing you to fail.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="176.38" dur="2.04">And then it talks about guidance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="178.42" dur="2.68">And it talks about how we can be blessed by the Bible.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="181.1" dur="2.24">Not just read it, but be blessed by it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="183.34" dur="1.56">That's all in chapter one.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="184.9" dur="2.36">And we'll look at those in the weeks ahead.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="187.26" dur="2.7">Chapter two talks about relationships.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="189.96" dur="3.06">We're gonna look at how do you treat people right.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="193.02" dur="2.628">And with people having to stay home,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="195.648" dur="4.242">all in the family together, kids and moms and dads,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="199.89" dur="2.32">and people are gonna get on each others' nerves.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="202.21" dur="2.74">That's gonna be an important message on relationships.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="204.95" dur="1.39">Then it talks about faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="206.34" dur="4.76">How do you really trust God when you don't feel like it</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="211.1" dur="2.18">and when things are going the wrong direction?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="213.28" dur="1.64">That's all in chapter two.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="214.92" dur="3.32">Chapter three, we're gonna talk about conversations.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="218.24" dur="1.66">The power of conversation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="219.9" dur="2.12">And this is one of the most important passages</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="222.02" dur="3.73">in the Bible on how do you manage your mouth.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="225.75" dur="2.25">That's important whether we're in a crisis or not.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="228" dur="2.27">And then it talks about friendship.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="230.27" dur="2.21">And it gives us very practical information</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="232.48" dur="2.71">on how do you build wise friendships</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="235.19" dur="2.7">and avoid unwise friendships.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="237.89" dur="2.24">That's chapter three.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="240.13" dur="3.5">Chapter four is on conflict.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="243.63" dur="2.39">And in chapter four, we talk about</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="246.02" dur="1.88">how do you avoid arguments.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="247.9" dur="1.56">And that'll be real helpful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="249.46" dur="2.78">As tensions rise and frustrations grow,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="252.24" dur="2.94">as people are out of work, how do you avoid arguments?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="255.18" dur="2.03">And then it talks about judging others.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="257.21" dur="2.74">How do you quit playing God?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="259.95" dur="1.84">That would cause a lot of peace in our lives</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="261.79" dur="1.08">if we could do that.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="262.87" dur="1.67">And then it talks about the future.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="264.54" dur="1.82">How do you plan for the future?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="266.36" dur="1.56">That's all in chapter four.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="267.92" dur="2.75">Now, in the last chapter, chapter five, I told you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="270.67" dur="0.98">there were four chapters, there are actually</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="271.65" dur="1.683">five chapters in James.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="274.327" dur="2.243">We're gonna talk about money.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="276.57" dur="3.65">And it talks about how to be wise with your wealth.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="280.22" dur="1.73">And then we're gonna look at patience.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="281.95" dur="3.26">What do you do when you're waiting on God?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="285.21" dur="1.92">The most difficult room to sit in</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="287.13" dur="3.87">is in the waiting room when you're in a hurry and God's not.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="291" dur="1.29">And then we're gonna look at prayer,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="292.29" dur="2.07">which is the last message we'll look at.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="294.36" dur="1.94">How do you pray about your problems?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="296.3" dur="2.58">The Bible says there's a way to pray and get answers,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="298.88" dur="2.29">and there's a way to not pray.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="301.17" dur="1.27">And we're gonna be looking at that.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="302.44" dur="3.763">Now today, we're just gonna look at the first six verses</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="306.203" dur="2.072">of the book of James.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="308.275" dur="5">If you don't have a Bible, then I want you to download</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="313.46" dur="3.73">off of this website the outline, the teaching notes,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="317.19" dur="2.02">because all the verses we're gonna look at</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="319.21" dur="2.04">are there on your outline.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="321.25" dur="3.22">James chapter one, the first six verses.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="324.47" dur="4.07">And the Bible says this when it talks about</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="328.54" dur="2.33">having to deal with your problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="330.87" dur="2.35">First, James 1:1 says this.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="333.22" dur="5">James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="338.86" dur="4.18">to the 12 tribes scattered among the nations, greetings.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="343.04" dur="2.23">Now, let me pause here for a minute and say</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="345.27" dur="2.95">this is the most understated introduction</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="348.22" dur="1.71">of any book in the Bible.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="349.93" dur="2.01">Because you know who James was?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="351.94" dur="3.073">He was the half-brother of Jesus.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="355.013" dur="1.507">What do you mean by that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="356.52" dur="2.19">It means he was Mary and Joseph's son.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="358.71" dur="2.899">Jesus was only Mary's son.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="361.609" dur="4.591">He wasn't Joseph's son 'cause God was the father of Jesus.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="366.2" dur="2.47">But the Bible tells us that Mary and Joseph</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="368.67" dur="3.52">had many children later on, and even gives us their names.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="372.19" dur="2.87">James was not a Christian.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="375.06" dur="2.27">He was not a follower of Christ.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="377.33" dur="3.54">He didn't believe his half-brother was the Messiah</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="380.87" dur="1.78">during Jesus' entire ministry.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="382.65" dur="1.29">He was a skeptic.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="383.94" dur="3.14">And you'd figure that, younger brother not believing</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="387.08" dur="3.22">in an older brother, well, that would be pretty plain.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="390.3" dur="3.81">What made James a believer in Jesus Christ?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="394.11" dur="1.56">The Resurrection.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="395.67" dur="4.42">When Jesus came back from death and walked around</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="400.09" dur="1.96">for another 40 days and James saw him,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="402.05" dur="3.79">he became a believer and later became the leader</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="405.84" dur="2.09">at the Church of Jerusalem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="407.93" dur="3.82">So if anybody had a right to drop names, it's this guy.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="411.75" dur="4.06">He could've said, James, the guy who grew up with Jesus.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="415.81" dur="2.95">James, the half-brother of Jesus.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="418.76" dur="3.87">James, Jesus' best friend growing up.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="422.63" dur="1.47">Those kind of things, but he doesn't.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="424.1" dur="2.68">He simply says James, a servant of God.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="426.78" dur="4.97">He doesn't pull rank, he doesn't promote his pedigree.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="431.75" dur="2.24">But then in verse two, he starts getting into</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="433.99" dur="5">this very first issue of God's purpose in your problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="439.07" dur="1.86">Let me read it to you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="440.93" dur="2.41">He says, when all kinds of trials</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="444.2" dur="5">crowd into your lives, don't resent them as intruders,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="449.52" dur="3.15">but welcome them as friends.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="452.67" dur="2.82">Realize they come to test your faith,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="455.49" dur="4.8">and to produce in you the quality of endurance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="460.29" dur="4.32">But let that process go on until that endurance</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="464.61" dur="5">is fully developed, and you will become a person</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="470.01" dur="5">of mature character and integrity</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="475.11" dur="2.71">with no weak spots.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="477.82" dur="2.24">That's the Phillips translation</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="480.06" dur="2.73">of James chapter one, verses two to six.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="482.79" dur="3.377">Now, he says when all kinds of trials come into your life</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="486.167" dur="2.963">and they crowd into your life, he said, don't resent them</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="489.13" dur="1.69">as intruders, welcome them as friends.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="490.82" dur="2.57">He says, you got problems, be happy.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="493.39" dur="2.09">You got problems, rejoice.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="495.48" dur="1.807">You got problems, smile.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="499.51" dur="0.87">Now, I know what you're thinking.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="500.38" dur="1.94">You go, are you kidding me?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="502.32" dur="3.15">Why should I be happy about COVID-19?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="505.47" dur="5">Why should I welcome these trials in my life?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="510.6" dur="2.31">How is that possible?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="512.91" dur="3.74">The key to this entire attitude of maintaining</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="516.65" dur="2.85">a positive attitude in the middle of a crisis</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="519.5" dur="3.65">is the word realize, it's the word realize.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="523.15" dur="2.19">He said, when all these kind of trials</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="525.34" dur="2.99">crowd into your lives, don't resent them as intruders,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="528.33" dur="4.89">but welcome them as friends, and realize, realize,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="533.22" dur="3.75">they come to test your faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="536.97" dur="3.839">And then he goes on, what it's gonna produce in their lives.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="540.809" dur="5">What he's saying here is that your success in handling</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="545.99" dur="4.44">the weeks that are ahead of us in this COVID-19 pandemic</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="550.43" dur="2.87">that's now all around the world, and as more and more</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="553.3" dur="3.11">nations are shutting down, and they're shutting down</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="556.41" dur="2.31">restaurants and they're shutting down stores,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="558.72" dur="1.89">and they're shutting down schools,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="560.61" dur="1.57">and they're shutting down churches,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="562.18" dur="1.69">and they're shutting down any place</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="563.87" dur="3.86">where people are gathering, and like here in Orange County,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="567.73" dur="4.29">where we're not allowed to meet with anybody this month.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="572.02" dur="3.75">He says, your success in handling these problems</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="575.77" dur="3.49">will be determined by your understanding.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="579.26" dur="1.3">By your understanding.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="580.56" dur="3.24">And by your attitude towards those problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="583.8" dur="3.69">It's what you realize, it's what you know.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="587.49" dur="3.79">Now, the first thing in this passage I want you to realize</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="591.28" dur="3.957">is that God gives us four reminders about problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="595.237" dur="2.253">You might wanna write these down.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="597.49" dur="2.07">Four reminders about problems in your life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="599.56" dur="2.35">which include the crisis we're going through right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="601.91" dur="5">Number one, he says first, problems are inevitable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="607.42" dur="2.34">Problems are inevitable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="609.76" dur="1.04">Now, how is he saying that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="610.8" dur="4.33">He says, when all kinds of trials come.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="615.13" dur="4.41">He doesn't say if all kinds of trials come, he says when.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="619.54" dur="1.72">You can count on it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="621.26" dur="3.27">This is not heaven where everything is perfect.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="624.53" dur="2.66">This is Earth where everything is broken.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="627.19" dur="2.05">And he's saying you will have problems,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="629.24" dur="3.44">you will have difficulties, you can count on it,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="632.68" dur="2.37">you can buy stock in it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="635.05" dur="2.99">Now, this is not something that James says alone.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="638.04" dur="1.62">All through the Bible it says it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="639.66" dur="2.77">Jesus said in the world you will have trials</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="642.43" dur="3.68">and temptations, and you will have tribulation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="646.11" dur="2.29">He said you're going to have problems in life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="648.4" dur="3.07">So why are we surprised when we have problems?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="651.47" dur="1.632">Peter says don't be surprised</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="653.102" dur="2.558">when you go through fiery trials.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="655.66" dur="1.786">Said don't don't act like it's something new.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="657.446" dur="2.744">Everybody goes through hard times.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="660.19" dur="2.04">Life is difficult.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="662.23" dur="2.53">This is not heaven, this is Earth.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="664.76" dur="3.18">Nobody's immune, nobody's isolated,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="667.94" dur="2.94">nobody's insulated, nobody's exempt.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="670.88" dur="1.73">He says you're gonna have problems</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="672.61" dur="2.78">because they are inevitable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="675.39" dur="3.84">You know, I remember one time when I was in college.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="679.23" dur="2.27">Many years ago, I was going through</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="681.5" dur="1.71">some really difficult times.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="683.21" dur="3.09">And I started praying, I said, "God, give me patience."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="686.3" dur="2.91">And instead of the trials getting better, they got worse.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="689.21" dur="2.22">And then I said, "God, I really need patience,"</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="691.43" dur="1.72">and the problems got more worse.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="693.15" dur="2.43">And then I said, "God, I really need patience,"</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="695.58" dur="2.93">and they got even more worse.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="698.51" dur="1.77">What was going on?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="700.28" dur="1.82">Well, finally I realized that after about six months,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="702.1" dur="2.64">I was a lot more patient than when I started out,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="704.74" dur="2.07">that the way God was teaching me patience</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="706.81" dur="3.2">was through those difficulties.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="710.01" dur="2.85">Now, problems are not some kind of elective course</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="712.86" dur="2.44">that you have a choice to take in life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="715.3" dur="2.863">No, they're required, you can't opt out of them.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="719.01" dur="3.71">In order to graduate from the school of life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="722.72" dur="1.96">you're gonna go through the school of hard knocks.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="724.68" dur="2.87">You're gonna go through problems, they are inevitable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="727.55" dur="1.35">That's what the Bible says.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="728.9" dur="2.43">Second thing the Bible says about problems is this.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="731.33" dur="3.923">Problems are variable, that means they're not all the same.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="735.253" dur="2.817">You don't get the same problem one after another.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="738.07" dur="1.89">You get a lot of different ones.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="739.96" dur="2.11">Not only do you get 'em, but you get different ones.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="742.07" dur="5">He says when you trial, when you have problems of all kinds.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="748.25" dur="2.09">You might circle that if you're taking notes.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="750.34" dur="3.54">When all kinds of trials come into your life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="753.88" dur="3.25">You know, I'm a gardener, and I once did a study,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="757.13" dur="2.32">and I discovered that the government here</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="759.45" dur="2.18">in the United States has classified</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="761.63" dur="3.493">205 different kinds of weeds.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="765.123" dur="4.767">I think 80% of them grow in my garden. (laughs)</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="769.89" dur="2.52">I often think that when I'm growing vegetables,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="772.41" dur="2.85">I should charge admission to Warren's Weed Farm.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="775.26" dur="3.62">But there are many kinds of of weeds,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="778.88" dur="1.82">and there are many kinds of trials,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="780.7" dur="1.76">there are many kinds of problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="782.46" dur="2.282">They come in all sizes, they come in all shapes.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="784.742" dur="2.898">There are more than 31 flavors.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="787.64" dur="2.75">This word here, all kinds, where it says</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="790.39" dur="1.55">there are all kinds of trials in your life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="791.94" dur="4.26">it actually in the Greek means multicolored.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="796.2" dur="2.795">In other words, there are a lot of shades of stress</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="798.995" dur="2.205">in your life, would you agree with that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="801.2" dur="1.9">There are a lot of shades of stress.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="803.1" dur="1.62">They don't all look the same.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="804.72" dur="2.67">There's financial stress, there's relational stress,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="807.39" dur="2.37">there's health stress, there's physical stress,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="809.76" dur="1.62">there's time stress.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="811.38" dur="5">He's saying that they're all different colors.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="816.41" dur="2.82">But if you out and you buy a car and you want</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="819.23" dur="3.44">a custom color, then you have to wait for it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="822.67" dur="2.98">And then when it's made, then you get your custom color.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="825.65" dur="2.01">That's actually the word that's used here.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="827.66" dur="4.99">It's a custom color, multicolored trials in your life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="832.65" dur="2.14">God allows them for a reason.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="834.79" dur="3.07">Some of your problems are actually custom made.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="837.86" dur="1.842">Some of them we just all experienced together,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="839.702" dur="2.908">like this one, COVID-19.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="842.61" dur="1.95">But he's saying problems are variable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="844.56" dur="2.845">And what I mean by that is they vary in intensity.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="847.405" dur="3.143">In other words, how hard they come.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="850.548" dur="3.792">They vary in frequency, and that is how long.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="854.34" dur="1.421">We don't know how long this is gonna last.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="855.761" dur="2.699">We don't know how hard it's gonna get.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="858.46" dur="2.197">I saw a sign the other day that said,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="860.657" dur="3.98">"Into every life some rain must fall,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="864.637" dur="2.743">"but this is ridiculous." (laughs)</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="867.38" dur="1.9">And I think that that's the way</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="869.28" dur="1.77">a lot of people are feeling right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="871.05" dur="1.92">This is ridiculous.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="872.97" dur="3.07">Problems are inevitable and they are variable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="876.04" dur="2.86">The third things James says so we're not shocked</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="878.9" dur="2.87">is problems are unpredictable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="881.77" dur="1.6">They're unpredictable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="883.37" dur="4.01">He says when trials crowd into your life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="887.38" dur="2.05">if you're taking notes, circle that phrase.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="889.43" dur="3.13">They crowd into your life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="892.56" dur="3.28">See, no problem ever comes when you need it</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="895.84" dur="1.6">or when you don't need it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="897.44" dur="1.97">It just comes when it wants to come.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="899.41" dur="1.97">That's part of the reason it's a problem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="901.38" dur="3.05">Problems come at the most inopportune time.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="904.43" dur="1.582">Have you ever felt like a problem</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="906.012" dur="2.778">came into your life, you go, not now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="908.79" dur="2.51">Really, like now?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="911.3" dur="3.82">Here at Saddleback Church, we were in a major campaign</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="915.12" dur="2.45">dreaming about the future.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="917.57" dur="3.27">And all of a sudden the coronavirus hits.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="920.84" dur="2.06">And I'm going, not now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="922.9" dur="1.673">(chuckles) Not now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="926.75" dur="3.073">Have you ever had a flat tire when you were late?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="931.729" dur="2.361">You don't get a flat tire when you got plenty of time.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="934.09" dur="1.823">You're in a hurry to go somewhere.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="937.12" dur="4.08">It's like the baby wets on your new dress</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="941.2" dur="4.952">as you're walking out for an important evening engagement.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="946.152" dur="2.918">Or you split your pants before you speak.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="949.07" dur="2.55">That actually happened to me one time</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="951.62" dur="1.713">on a Sunday a long time ago.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="956" dur="4.64">Some people, they're so impatient,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="960.64" dur="1.77">they can't wait for a revolving door.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="962.41" dur="1.72">They've just gotta, they gotta do it,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="964.13" dur="2.38">they've gotta do it now, they gotta do it now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="966.51" dur="3.99">I remember many years ago I was in Japan,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="970.5" dur="3.34">and I was standing at a subway waiting for the subway</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="973.84" dur="2.55">to arrive, and when it opened, the doors opened,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="976.39" dur="3.33">and a young Japanese man immediately</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="979.72" dur="4.49">projectile vomited on me as I was standing there.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="984.21" dur="5">And I thought, why me, why now?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="989.9" dur="3.583">They are unpredictable, they come when you don't need 'em.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="994.47" dur="2.94">You can seldom predict the problems in your life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="997.41" dur="3.69">Now notice, it says when all kinds of trials, when,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1001.1" dur="3">they're inevitable, all kinds, they're variable,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1004.1" dur="3.98">crowd into your life, that's they're unpredictable,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1008.08" dur="3.213">he says don't resent them as intruders.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1012.19" dur="1.01">What is he saying here?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1013.2" dur="2.16">Well, I'm gonna explain this more in detail.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1015.36" dur="2.6">But here's the fourth thing the Bible says about problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1017.96" dur="2.553">Problems are purposeful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1021.4" dur="2.69">Problems are purposeful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1024.09" dur="3.07">God has a purpose in everything.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1027.16" dur="2.72">Even the bad things that happen in our life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1029.88" dur="2.16">God can bring good out of them.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1032.04" dur="1.64">God doesn't have to cause every problem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1033.68" dur="2.62">Most of the problems we cause ourselves.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1036.3" dur="2.1">People say, why do people get sick?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1038.4" dur="3.69">Well, one reason is we don't do what God tells us to do.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1042.09" dur="3.02">If we ate what God tells us to eat,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1045.11" dur="2.71">if we slept like God tells us to get rest,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1047.82" dur="3.28">if we exercise as God tells us to exercise,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1051.1" dur="3.16">if we didn't allow negative emotions into our lives</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1054.26" dur="2.06">like God tells, if we obeyed God,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1056.32" dur="2.65">we wouldn't have most of our problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1058.97" dur="3.07">Studies have shown that about 80% of the health problems</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1062.04" dur="3.57">in this country, in America, are caused by what are called</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1065.61" dur="3">chronic lifestyle choices.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1068.61" dur="3.05">In other words, we just don't do the right thing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1071.66" dur="1.14">We don't do the healthy thing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1072.8" dur="2.66">We often do the self-destructive thing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1075.46" dur="2.58">But what he's saying is here, problems are purposeful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1078.04" dur="3.53">He says when you encounter problems,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1081.57" dur="3.46">realize they come to produce.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1085.03" dur="3.56">Circle that phrase, they come to produce.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1088.59" dur="3.22">Problems can be productive.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1091.81" dur="2.23">Now, they're not automatically productive.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1094.04" dur="3.06">This COVID virus, if I don't respond in the right day,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1097.1" dur="3.35">it won't produce anything great in my life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1100.45" dur="2.17">But if I respond in the right way,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1102.62" dur="2.25">even the most negative things in my life</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1104.87" dur="3.89">can produce growth and benefit and blessing,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1108.76" dur="2.23">in your life and in my life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1110.99" dur="2.26">They come to produce.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1113.25" dur="4.59">He's saying here that suffering and stress</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1117.84" dur="5">and sorrow, yes, and even sickness can accomplish something</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1123.42" dur="2.913">of value if we let it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1127.363" dur="3.887">It's all in our choice, it's all in our attitude.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1131.25" dur="4.043">God uses the difficulties in our lives.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1136.9" dur="2.33">You say, well, how does he do that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1139.23" dur="4.04">How does God use difficulties and problems in our life?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1143.27" dur="3.29">Well, thanks for asking, because the next passage</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1146.56" dur="1.75">or the next part of the verses say</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1148.31" dur="2.61">that God uses them three ways.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1150.92" dur="3.09">Three ways, God uses problems in your life three ways.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1154.01" dur="4.18">First, problems test my faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1158.19" dur="2.03">Now, your faith is like a muscle.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1160.22" dur="3.8">A muscle can't be strengthened unless it's tested,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1164.02" dur="3.3">unless it's stretched, unless it's put under pressure.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1167.32" dur="4.99">You don't develop strong muscles by doing nothing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1172.31" dur="3.09">You develop strong muscles by stretching them</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1175.4" dur="2.53">and strengthening them and testing them</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1177.93" dur="2.7">and pushing them to the limit.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1180.63" dur="5">So he's saying problems come to test my faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1185.88" dur="4.38">He says realize that they come to test your faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1190.26" dur="3.28">Now, that word testing right there, that is a term</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1193.54" dur="5">in the Bible times that was used for refining metals.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1198.61" dur="3.05">And what you would do is you'd take a precious metal</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1201.66" dur="1.768">like silver or gold or something else,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1203.428" dur="2.932">and you would put it in a big pot, and you would heat it</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1206.36" dur="2.54">to extremely high temperatures, why?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1208.9" dur="1.17">In the high temperatures,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1210.07" dur="3.34">all of the impurities are burned off.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1213.41" dur="4.05">And the only thing that's left is the pure gold</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1217.46" dur="1.946">or the pure silver.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1219.406" dur="3.164">That's the Greek word here for testing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1222.57" dur="4.54">It's the refining fire of when God puts the heat on</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1227.11" dur="1.705">and allows that in our lives,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1228.815" dur="3.345">it burns off stuff that isn't important.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1232.16" dur="2.94">You know what's gonna happen in the next few weeks?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1235.1" dur="2.134">Stuff that we all thought was really important,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1237.234" dur="1.726">we're gonna realize, hmm, I got along</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1238.96" dur="1.273">just fine without that.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1241.1" dur="2.51">It's gonna reorder our priorities,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1243.61" dur="2.41">because things are going to change.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1246.02" dur="4.22">Now, the classic example of how problems test your faith</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1251.17" dur="4.02">are the stories that are about Job in the Bible.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1255.19" dur="1.75">There's a whole book about Job.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1256.94" dur="3.49">You know, Job was the wealthiest man in the Bible,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1260.43" dur="2.74">and in a single day, he lost everything.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1263.17" dur="2.82">He lost all his family, he lost all his wealth,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1265.99" dur="3.97">he lost all his friends, terrorists attacked his family,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1269.96" dur="4.567">he got a dreaded, very painful chronic disease</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1276.283" dur="3.437">that could not be cured.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1279.72" dur="1.323">Okay, he's terminal.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1282.109" dur="3.721">And yet God was testing his faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1285.83" dur="3.27">And God later restores him actually double</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1289.1" dur="3.423">what he had before he went through the big test.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1293.59" dur="2.82">At one time I read a quote somewhere a long time ago</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1296.41" dur="2.92">that said people are like tea bags.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1299.33" dur="1.34">You don't really know what's in 'em</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1300.67" dur="2.67">until you drop 'em in hot water.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1303.34" dur="3.09">And then you can see what's really inside them.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1306.43" dur="2.77">Have you ever had one of those hot water days?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1309.2" dur="3.763">You ever had one of those hot water weeks or months?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1313.82" dur="3.78">We're in a hot water situation right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1317.6" dur="2.41">And what's gonna come out of you is what's inside of you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1320.01" dur="1.33">It's like a toothpaste.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1321.34" dur="4.15">If I have a toothpaste tube and I push it,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1325.49" dur="1.18">what's gonna come out?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1326.67" dur="0.9">You say, well, toothpaste.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1327.57" dur="1.65">No, not necessarily.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1329.22" dur="1.95">It could say toothpaste on the outside,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1331.17" dur="1.67">but it could have marinara sauce</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1332.84" dur="2.6">or peanut butter or mayonnaise on the inside.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1335.44" dur="2.92">What's gonna come out when it's put under pressure</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1338.36" dur="1.403">is whatever's in it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1341.13" dur="3.603">And in the days ahead as you deal with the COVID virus,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1346.266" dur="2.224">what's gonna come out of you is what's inside of you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1348.49" dur="2.24">And if you're filled with bitterness, that'll come out.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1350.73" dur="2.23">And if you're filled with frustration, that'll come out.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1352.96" dur="3.79">And if you're filled with anger or worry or guilt</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1356.75" dur="3.46">or shame or insecurity, that's gonna come out.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1360.21" dur="4">If you're filled with fear that's, whatever is inside of you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1364.21" dur="3.52">is what's gonna come out when the pressure is put on you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1367.73" dur="1.44">And that's what he's saying here,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1369.17" dur="2.23">that problems test my faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1371.4" dur="5">You know, years ago, I met an old guy just really</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1376.98" dur="3.23">in a conference many years ago back in the East.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1380.21" dur="1.74">I think was Tennessee.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1381.95" dur="3.91">And he, this old guy told me how getting laid off</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1387.13" dur="4.8">was the greatest benefit in his life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1391.93" dur="2.017">And I said, "Okay, I wanna hear this story.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1393.947" dur="1.523">"Tell me all about it."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1395.47" dur="1.67">And what it was is he had worked</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1397.14" dur="2.823">at a sawmill all of his life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1400.83" dur="2.41">He'd been a sawmiller all of his life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1403.24" dur="3.34">But one day during an economic downturn,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1406.58" dur="3.607">his boss walked in and suddenly announced, "You're fired."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1411.19" dur="3.54">And all of his expertise went out the door.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1414.73" dur="4.62">And he was laid off at 40 years of age with a wife</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1419.35" dur="3.85">and a family and no other job opportunities around him,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1423.2" dur="2.923">and there was a recession going on at that time.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1427.03" dur="3.5">And he was discouraged, and he was fearful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1430.53" dur="1.77">Some of you may feel that way right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1432.3" dur="1.58">You may have already been laid off.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1433.88" dur="1.76">Maybe you're fearing you will be</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1435.64" dur="2.63">laid off during this crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1438.27" dur="2.45">And he was pretty depressed, he was pretty fearful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1440.72" dur="1.827">He said, I wrote this down, he said, "I felt like</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1442.547" dur="3.97">"my world had caved in the day that I was fired.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1446.517" dur="2.2">"But when I went home, I told my wife what happened,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1448.717" dur="3.57">"and she asked, 'So what are you gonna do now?'</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1452.287" dur="2.98">"And I said, well then since I got fired,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1455.267" dur="3.9">"I'm gonna do what I've always wanted to do.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1459.167" dur="1.84">"Become a builder.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1461.007" dur="1.61">"I'm gonna mortgage our home</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1462.617" dur="2.413">"and I'm gonna go into the building business."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1465.03" dur="2.887">And he told me, "You know, Rick, my first venture</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1467.917" dur="4.13">"was the construction of two small motels."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1472.965" dur="2.115">That's what he did.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1475.08" dur="4.267">But he said, "Within five years, I was a multi-millionaire."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1480.21" dur="2.99">That man's name, the man that I was talking to,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1483.2" dur="3.5">was Wallace Johnson, and the business that he started</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1486.7" dur="4.39">after getting fired was called Holiday Inns.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1491.09" dur="1.44">Holiday Inns.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1492.53" dur="2.877">Wallace told me, "Rick, today, if I could locate</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1495.407" dur="3.13">"the man who fired me, I would sincerely</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1498.537" dur="2.143">"thank him for what he did."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1500.68" dur="2.56">At that time when it happened, I didn't understand</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1503.24" dur="2.83">why I was fired, why I was laid off.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1506.07" dur="3.94">But only later could I see that it was God's unerring</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1510.01" dur="4.483">and wondrous plan to get me into the career of his choosing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1515.76" dur="3.05">Problems are purposeful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1518.81" dur="1.17">They have a purpose.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1519.98" dur="4.18">Realize they come to produce, and one of the first things</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1524.16" dur="3.984">they produce is greater faith, they test your faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1528.144" dur="3.226">Number two, here's the second benefit of problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1531.37" dur="3.27">Problems develop my endurance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1534.64" dur="1.52">They develop my endurance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1536.16" dur="2.23">That's the next part of the phrase, it says</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1538.39" dur="5">these problems come to develop endurance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1543.45" dur="2.33">They develop endurance in your life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1545.78" dur="1.91">What are the result of problems in your life?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1547.69" dur="1.52">Staying power.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1549.21" dur="2.82">It's literally the ability to handle pressure.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1552.03" dur="2.253">Today we call it resilience.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1555.12" dur="1.79">The ability to bounce back.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1556.91" dur="3.197">And one of the greatest qualities every child needs to learn</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1560.107" dur="3.473">and every adult needs to learn is resilience.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1563.58" dur="2.92">Because everybody falls, everybody stumbles,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1566.5" dur="2.05">everybody goes through tough times,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1568.55" dur="3.31">everybody gets sick at different times.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1571.86" dur="2.39">Everybody has failures in their life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1574.25" dur="2.7">It's how do you handle pressure.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1576.95" dur="3.613">Endurance, you keep on keeping on and hanging on.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1581.52" dur="1.99">Well, how do you learn to do that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1583.51" dur="3.53">How do you learn to handle pressure?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1587.04" dur="2.28">Through experience, that's the only way.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1589.32" dur="4.93">You don't learn to handle pressure in a textbook.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1594.25" dur="4.02">You don't learn how to handle pressure in a seminar.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1598.27" dur="3.76">You learn to handle pressure by being put under pressure.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1602.03" dur="2.53">And you don't know what's in you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1604.56" dur="3.063">until you've actually been put in that situation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1609.77" dur="2.7">In the second year of Saddleback Church, 1981,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1612.47" dur="1.36">I went through a period of depression</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1613.83" dur="2.823">where every single week I wanted to resign.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1617.64" dur="3.88">And I wanted to quit every Sunday afternoon.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1621.52" dur="3.14">And yet, I was going through a difficult time in my life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1624.66" dur="2.3">and yet I would put one foot in front of the other</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1626.96" dur="3.19">as God, not get me to build a great church,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1630.15" dur="1.973">but God, get me through this week.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1633.01" dur="2.1">And I just would not give up.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1635.11" dur="2.22">I'm so glad I didn't give up.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1637.33" dur="3.09">But I'm even more glad that God didn't give up on me.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1640.42" dur="1.46">Because that was a test.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1641.88" dur="5">And during that year of trial, I developed some spiritual</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1647.51" dur="3.56">and relational and emotional and mental strength</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1651.07" dur="4.28">that allowed me years later to juggle all kinds of balls</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1655.35" dur="4.64">and handle enormous amounts of stress in the public eye</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1659.99" dur="2.01">because I went through that year</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1662" dur="3.363">of flat out difficulty, one after another.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1666.51" dur="5">You know, America has had a love affair with convenience.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1672.57" dur="2.113">We love convenience.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1675.593" dur="3.187">In the days and the weeks ahead in this crisis,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1678.78" dur="2.58">there are gonna be a lot of things that are inconvenient.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1681.36" dur="1.13">Inconvenient.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1682.49" dur="2.95">And what are we gonna do with ourselves</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1685.44" dur="2.503">when everything isn't comfortable,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1688.96" dur="2.52">when you have to just keep on keeping on</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1691.48" dur="2.1">when you don't feel like keeping on.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1693.58" dur="5">You know, the goal of a triathlon or the goal of a marathon</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1698.71" dur="3.1">is really not about speed, how quickly you get there,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1701.81" dur="1.86">it's more about endurance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1703.67" dur="2.34">Do you finish the race?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1706.01" dur="2.43">How do you prepare for those kind of things?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1708.44" dur="2.13">Only by going through them.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1710.57" dur="3.487">So when you are stretched in the days ahead,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1714.057" dur="2.213">don't worry about it, don't worry about it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1716.27" dur="3.02">Problems develop my endurance.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1719.29" dur="3.21">Problems have a purpose, they're purposeful.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1722.5" dur="2.6">The third thing that James tells us about the problems</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1725.1" dur="3.68">we go through is that problems mature my character.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1728.78" dur="3.68">And he says this in verse four of James chapter one.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1732.46" dur="4.18">He says but, let the process go on</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1736.64" dur="4.49">until you become people of mature character</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1741.13" dur="3.663">and integrity with no weak spots.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1746.3" dur="1.32">Wouldn't you like to have that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1747.62" dur="2.42">Wouldn't you like to hear people say, you know,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1750.04" dur="3.32">that woman has no weak spots in her character.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1753.36" dur="4.53">That man, that guy has no weak spots in his character.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1757.89" dur="3.04">How do you get that kind of mature character?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1760.93" dur="4.58">Let the process go on until you become people,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1765.51" dur="3.38">men and women, of mature character</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1768.89" dur="3.33">and integrity with no weak spots.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1772.22" dur="2.6">You know, there was a famous study done many,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1774.82" dur="4">many years ago in Russia that I remember writing down,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1778.82" dur="4.08">and it was on the effect of how different living conditions</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1782.9" dur="5">affected the longevity or the lifespan of different animals.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1789.11" dur="3.6">And so they put some animals in easy living,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1792.71" dur="2.91">and they put some other animals in more difficult</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1795.62" dur="1.89">and harsh environments.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1797.51" dur="2.87">And the scientists discovered that the animals</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1800.38" dur="2.22">that were placed in the comfortable</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1802.6" dur="2.88">and the easy environments, conditions,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1805.48" dur="4.73">those living conditions, actually became weaker.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1810.21" dur="4.41">Because the conditions were so easy, they became weaker</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1814.62" dur="2.22">and more susceptible to sickness.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1816.84" dur="5">And those who were in comfortable conditions died sooner</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1821.9" dur="2.418">than those who were allowed to experience</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1824.318" dur="3.105">the normal hardships of life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1828.72" dur="1.163">Isn't that interesting?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1830.81" dur="2.2">What's true of animals I'm sure is true</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1833.01" dur="1.94">of our character, too.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1834.95" dur="4.92">And in the Western culture particularly in modern world,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1839.87" dur="3.38">we've had it so easy in so many ways.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1843.25" dur="1.973">Living lives of convenience.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1846.94" dur="1.71">God's number one goal in your life</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1848.65" dur="2.67">is to make you like Jesus Christ in character.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1851.32" dur="1.87">To think like Christ, to act like Christ,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1853.19" dur="3.94">to live like Christ, to love like Christ,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1857.13" dur="2.2">to be positive like Christ.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1859.33" dur="3.62">And if that's true, and the Bible says this over and over,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1862.95" dur="2.13">then God's gonna take you through the same things</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1865.08" dur="4.304">that Jesus went through to grow your character.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1869.384" dur="2.786">You say, well, what is Jesus like?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1872.17" dur="3.8">Jesus is love and joy and peace and patience and kindness,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1875.97" dur="2.34">the fruit of the Spirit, all those things.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1878.31" dur="1.4">And how does God produce those?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1879.71" dur="2.9">By putting us in the opposite situation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1882.61" dur="3.76">We learn patience when we're tempted to be impatient.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1886.37" dur="3.37">We learn love when we're put around unlovely people.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1889.74" dur="2.49">We learn joy in the middle of grief.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1892.23" dur="4.67">We learn to wait and have that kind of patience</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1896.9" dur="1.56">when we have to wait.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1898.46" dur="3.423">We learn kindness when we're tempted to be selfish.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1902.77" dur="3.66">In the days ahead, it's gonna be very tempting</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1906.43" dur="2.83">to just hunker in a bunker, pull back in,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1909.26" dur="2.54">and I said, we're gonna take care of us.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1911.8" dur="4.22">Me, myself, and I, my family, us four and no more</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1916.02" dur="2.14">and forget about everybody else.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1918.16" dur="2.62">But that will shrink your soul.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1920.78" dur="2.51">If you will begin to think about other people</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1923.29" dur="3.254">and helping those who are vulnerable, the aged</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1926.544" dur="4.026">and those with preexisting conditions,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1930.57" dur="3.47">and if you will reach out, your soul will grow,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1934.04" dur="3.34">your heart will grow, you'll be a better person</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1937.38" dur="5">at the end of this crisis than you were at the start, okay?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1943.52" dur="2.98">You see, God, when he wants to build your character,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1946.5" dur="1.37">he can use two things.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1947.87" dur="2.92">He can use his Word, the truth changes us,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1950.79" dur="3.56">and he can use circumstances, which is much more difficult.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1954.35" dur="4">Now, God would rather use the first way, the Word.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1958.35" dur="1.63">But we don't always listen to the Word,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1959.98" dur="3.77">so he uses circumstances to get our attention.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1963.75" dur="4.6">And it's more difficult, but it's often more effective.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1968.35" dur="3.23">Now, you say, well, okay, Rick, I get it,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1971.58" dur="4.22">that the problems are variable and they're purposeful,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1975.8" dur="3.18">and they're here to test my faith, and they're gonna be</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1978.98" dur="2.47">all different kinds, and they don't come when I want 'em.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1981.45" dur="4.393">And God can use 'em to grow my character and mature my life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1986.95" dur="1.72">So what am I supposed to do?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1988.67" dur="4.94">In the next few days and in the weeks and maybe months ahead</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1993.61" dur="3.75">as we face this coronavirus crisis together,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="1997.36" dur="4.09">how should I respond to problems in my life?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2001.45" dur="1.98">And I'm not just talking about the virus.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2003.43" dur="2.747">I'm talking about problems that'll come as a result</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2006.177" dur="5">of being out of work or kids being at home</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2011.26" dur="3.12">or all the other things that are upsetting life</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2014.38" dur="1.553">as it normally has been.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2017.04" dur="2.24">How should I respond to the problems of my life?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2019.28" dur="2.9">Well, again, James is very specific,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2022.18" dur="3.39">and he gives us three very practical,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2025.57" dur="4.45">they're radical responses, but they're the right responses.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2030.02" dur="1.32">In fact, when I tell you the first one,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2031.34" dur="2.21">you're gonna go, you gotta be kidding me.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2033.55" dur="3.07">But there are three responses, they all start with R.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2036.62" dur="2.76">The first response he says is when you're</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2039.38" dur="4.46">going through tough times, rejoice.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2043.84" dur="2.41">You go, are you kidding?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2046.25" dur="1.73">That sounds masochistic.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2047.98" dur="2.29">I'm not saying rejoice over the problem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2050.27" dur="1.69">Follow me on this just a minute.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2051.96" dur="3.54">He says consider it pure joy.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2055.5" dur="2.69">Treat these problems as friends.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2058.19" dur="1.78">Now, don't misunderstand me.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2059.97" dur="3.14">He is not saying fake it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2063.11" dur="3.57">He's not saying put on a plastic smile,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2066.68" dur="2.33">pretend that everything's okay and it's not,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2069.01" dur="1.36">because it's not.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2070.37" dur="3.12">Pollyanna, Little Orphan Annie, the sun</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2073.49" dur="3.512">will come out tomorrow, it may not come out tomorrow.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2077.002" dur="3.568">He's not saying deny reality, not at all.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2080.57" dur="2.76">He's not saying be a masochist.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2083.33" dur="2.87">Oh boy, I get to go through pain.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2086.2" dur="1.72">God hates pain as much as you do.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2087.92" dur="2.1">Oh, I get to suffer, whoopee.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2090.02" dur="3.49">And you have this martyr complex, and you know,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2093.51" dur="1.937">I only have this spiritual feeling when I feel bad.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2095.447" dur="2.983">No, no, no, God doesn't want you to be a martyr.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2098.43" dur="1.54">God doesn't want you to have</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2099.97" dur="3.453">a masochistic attitude toward pain.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2104.74" dur="2.5">You know, I remember one time I was going through</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2107.24" dur="3.21">a really difficult time and a friend was trying to be kind</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2110.45" dur="2.307">and they said, "You know, Rick, cheer up</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2112.757" dur="1.86">"because things could be worse."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2115.61" dur="2.14">And guess what, they got worse.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2117.75" dur="2.23">That was no help at all.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2119.98" dur="2.225">I did cheer up and they did get worse.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2122.205" dur="1.105">(chuckles)</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2123.31" dur="4.588">So it's not about a fake Pollyanna positive thinking.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2127.898" dur="3.352">If I act enthusiastic, I'll be enthusiastic.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2131.25" dur="2.88">No, no, no, no, it's much, much deeper than that.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2134.13" dur="5">We don't rejoice, listen, we don't rejoice for the problem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2140.17" dur="5">We rejoice in the problem, while we are in the problem,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2145.71" dur="2.13">there's still a lot of things to rejoice about.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2147.84" dur="2.92">Not the problem itself, but the other things</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2150.76" dur="2.514">that we can rejoice about in the problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2153.274" dur="2.836">Why can we rejoice even in the problem?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2156.11" dur="2.54">'Cause we know there's a purpose for it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2158.65" dur="1.74">Because we know that God will never leave us.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2160.39" dur="2.97">Because we know a lot of different things.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2163.36" dur="1.81">We know that God has a purpose.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2165.17" dur="4.58">Notice he says consider it pure joy.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2169.75" dur="1.98">Circle the word consider.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2171.73" dur="4.8">Consider means to deliberately make up your mind.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2176.53" dur="2.22">You got an attitude adjustment</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2178.75" dur="1.71">that you're gonna have to make here.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2180.46" dur="3.869">Is it your choice to rejoice?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2184.329" dur="3.201">In Psalm 34 verse one, he says</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2187.53" dur="3.69">I will bless the Lord at all times.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2191.22" dur="1.39">At all times.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2192.61" dur="0.92">And he says I will.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2193.53" dur="2.48">It's a choice of the will, it's a decision.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2196.01" dur="1.66">It's a commitment, it's a choice.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2197.67" dur="4.08">Now, you're gonna go through this months ahead</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2201.75" dur="2.4">with either a good attitude or a bad attitude.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2204.15" dur="2.7">If your attitude is bad, you're gonna make yourself</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2206.85" dur="2.35">and everybody else around you miserable.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2209.2" dur="3.15">But if your attitude is good, it's your choice to rejoice.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2212.35" dur="1.76">You say, let's look on the bright side.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2214.11" dur="3.09">Let's find the things that we can thank God for.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2217.2" dur="2.15">And let's realize that even in the bad,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2219.35" dur="2.88">God can bring good out of the bad.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2222.23" dur="2.29">So do an attitude adjustment.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2224.52" dur="3.25">I'm not gonna be bitter in this crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2227.77" dur="3.23">I'm gonna be better in this crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2231" dur="4.39">I'm gonna choose, it's my choice to rejoice.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2235.39" dur="3.41">Okay, number two, the second R is request.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2238.8" dur="4.08">And that is ask God for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2242.88" dur="3.29">This is what you wanna do anytime you're in a crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2246.17" dur="2.39">You wanna ask God for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2248.56" dur="2.1">Last week, if you listened to last week's message,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2250.66" dur="2.72">and if you missed it, go back online and watch that message</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2253.38" dur="5">on making it through the valley of the virus without fear.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2260.09" dur="2.15">It's your choice to rejoice,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2262.24" dur="2.733">but then you ask God for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2265.89" dur="2.13">And you ask God for wisdom and you pray</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2268.02" dur="1.51">and you pray about your problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2269.53" dur="2.99">Verse seven says this in James one.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2272.52" dur="4.83">If in this process any of you doesn't know how to meet</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2277.35" dur="4.05">any particular problem, this is out of Phillips translation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2281.4" dur="2.24">If in the process any of you doesn't know how to meet</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2283.64" dur="3.44">any particular problem you only have to ask God</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2287.08" dur="2.65">who gives generously to all men</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2289.73" dur="2.6">without making them feel guilty.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2292.33" dur="3.45">And you may be sure that the necessary wisdom</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2295.78" dur="1.963">will be given you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2298.65" dur="2.18">They say why of all things would I ask for wisdom</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2300.83" dur="1.35">in the middle of a problem?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2303.29" dur="2.07">So you learn from it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2305.36" dur="1.57">So you can learn from the problem,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2306.93" dur="1.48">that's why you ask for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2308.41" dur="4.26">It's much more helpful if you'll stop asking why,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2312.67" dur="3.04">why is this happening, and start asking what,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2315.71" dur="1.45">what do you want me to learn?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2318.09" dur="1.92">What do you want me to become?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2320.01" dur="2.27">How can I grow from this?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2322.28" dur="2.17">How can I become a better woman?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2324.45" dur="4.51">How can I become a better man through this crisis?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2328.96" dur="1.32">Yeah, I'm being tested.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2330.28" dur="1.53">I'm not gonna worry about the why.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2331.81" dur="1.71">Why doesn't really even matter.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2333.52" dur="3.77">What matters is what, what am I gonna become,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2337.29" dur="3.7">and what am I gonna learn from this situation?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2340.99" dur="2.71">And in order to do that, you've gotta ask for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2343.7" dur="2.56">So he says whenever you need wisdom, just ask God,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2346.26" dur="1.61">God's gonna give it to you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2347.87" dur="2.2">So you say, God, I need wisdom as a mom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2350.07" dur="3.23">My kids are gonna be home for the next month.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2353.3" dur="2.22">I need wisdom as a dad.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2355.52" dur="3.48">How do I lead when our jobs are in jeopardy</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2359" dur="1.553">and I can't work right now?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2362.05" dur="1.45">Ask God for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2363.5" dur="1.84">Don't ask why, but ask what.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2365.34" dur="2.99">So first you rejoice, you get a positive attitude</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2368.33" dur="3.14">of saying I'm gonna thank God not for the problem,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2371.47" dur="3.14">but I'm gonna thank God in the problem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2374.61" dur="2.92">Because God's good even when life sucks.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2377.53" dur="2.137">That's why I'm calling this series</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2379.667" dur="5">"A Real Faith that Works When Life Doesn't."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2385.41" dur="1.473">When life doesn't work.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2387.96" dur="1.69">So I rejoice and I request.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2389.65" dur="4.32">The third thing James says to do is relax.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2393.97" dur="4.83">Yeah, just kinda chill out, don't get yourself</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2398.8" dur="3.86">all in a heap of nerves.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2402.66" dur="2.64">Don't get so stressed out you can't do anything.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2405.3" dur="1.33">Don't worry about the future.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2406.63" dur="2.83">God says I'll take care of you, trust me.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2409.46" dur="2.42">You trust God to know what's best.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2411.88" dur="2.17">You cooperate with him.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2414.05" dur="4.84">You don't short-circuit the situation you're going through.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2418.89" dur="3.07">But you just say, God, I'm gonna relax.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2421.96" dur="2.28">I'm not gonna doubt.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2424.24" dur="1.87">I'm not gonna doubt.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2426.11" dur="2.76">I'm gonna trust you in this situation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2428.87" dur="3.15">Verse eight is the last verse we're gonna look at.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2432.02" dur="1.26">Well, we'll look at one more in a minute.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2433.28" dur="5">But verse eight says, but you must ask in sincere faith</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2438.9" dur="2.49">without secret doubts.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2441.39" dur="1.86">What are you asking for in sincere faith?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2443.25" dur="1.57">Ask for wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2444.82" dur="2.07">And say, God, I need wisdom, and I thank you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2446.89" dur="1.26">you're gonna give me the wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2448.15" dur="2.89">I thank you, you are giving me wisdom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2451.04" dur="3.06">Don't freak out, don't doubt,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2454.1" dur="2.57">but take it out to God.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2456.67" dur="5">You know, the Bible says, earlier when I pointed out</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2461.67" dur="3.24">that it said these many kinds of problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2464.91" dur="1.8">You know, we talk about they're multicolored,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2466.71" dur="2.23">many, many kinds of problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2468.94" dur="2.81">That word in Greek, many kinds of problem,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2471.75" dur="3.11">is the same word that's covered in First Peter</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2474.86" dur="1.97">chapter four, verse four that said</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2476.83" dur="4.11">God has many kinds of grace to give you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2480.94" dur="3.35">God's many kinds of grace.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2484.29" dur="5">It's the same multicolored, multifeatured, like a diamond.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2489.339" dur="1.694">What is he saying there?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2492.28" dur="2.08">For every problem that you have,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2494.36" dur="2.87">there's a grace from God that's available.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2497.23" dur="5">For every many kind of trial and tribulation</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2502.74" dur="4.5">and difficulty, there is a kind of grace and mercy</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2507.24" dur="2.25">and power that God wants to give you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2509.49" dur="2.05">to match that particular problem.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2511.54" dur="2.04">You need grace for this, you need grace for that,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2513.58" dur="1">you need grace for this.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2514.58" dur="3.76">God says my grace is as multifeatured</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2518.34" dur="1.99">as the problems that you're facing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2520.33" dur="1.27">So what am I saying?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2521.6" dur="1.74">I'm saying that all the problems that are in your life,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2523.34" dur="2.44">including this COVID crisis,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2525.78" dur="4.03">the devil means to defeat you with these problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2529.81" dur="4.41">But God means to develop you through these problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2534.22" dur="3.543">He wants to defeat you, Satan, but God wants to develop you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2539.44" dur="2.12">Now, the problems that come into your life</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2541.56" dur="3.34">don't automatically make you a better person.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2544.9" dur="2.51">A lot of people become bitter people from 'em.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2547.41" dur="3.28">It doesn't automatically make you a better person.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2550.69" dur="2.96">It's your attitude that makes the difference.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2553.65" dur="2.86">And that's where I wanna give you another thing to remember.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2556.51" dur="3.07">Number four, the fourth thing to remember</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2559.58" dur="3.75">when you're going through problems is to remember</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2563.33" dur="1.99">the promises of God.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2565.32" dur="1.84">Remember the promises of God.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2567.16" dur="1.28">That's down in verse 12.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2568.44" dur="1.52">Let me read you this promise.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2569.96" dur="2.363">James chapter one, verse 12.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2573.55" dur="5">Blessed is the person who perseveres under trial,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2579.84" dur="2.67">because when he has stood the test,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2582.51" dur="5">he will receive the crown of life that God has promised,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2587.82" dur="2.75">there's the word, to those who love him.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2590.57" dur="0.833">Let me read it again.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2591.403" dur="2.057">I want you to listen to it very closely.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2593.46" dur="5">Blessed is the person who perseveres under trial,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2598.84" dur="3.36">who handles the difficulties,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2602.2" dur="2.12">like the situation we're in right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2604.32" dur="3.67">Blessed will be the person who endures, who perseveres,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2607.99" dur="3.87">who trusts God, who keeps believing under trial,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2611.86" dur="3.12">because when he has stood the test, coming out</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2614.98" dur="2.72">on the backside, this trial is not gonna last.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2617.7" dur="1.4">There's an end to it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2619.1" dur="2.07">You'll come out at the other end of the tunnel.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2621.17" dur="4.41">You will receive the crown of life.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2625.58" dur="3.38">Well, I don't even know all what that means, but it's good.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2628.96" dur="2.7">The crown of life that God has promised</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2631.66" dur="2.373">to those who love him.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2635.73" dur="2.32">It's your choice to rejoice.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2638.05" dur="2.92">It's your choice to trust the wisdom of God</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2640.97" dur="1.72">instead of doubting.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2642.69" dur="4.21">Ask God for wisdom to help you from your situation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2646.9" dur="3.23">And then ask God for the faith to endure.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2650.13" dur="2.27">And say, God, I'm not gonna give up.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2652.4" dur="1.793">This too shall pass.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2655.329" dur="2.111">Somebody was once asked, what's your favorite</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2657.44" dur="0.833">verse of the Bible?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2658.273" dur="1.297">Said, it came to pass.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2659.57" dur="1.273">And so why do you like that verse?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2660.843" dur="2.687">Because when problems come, I know they didn't come to stay.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2663.53" dur="1.194">They came to pass.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2664.724" dur="1.116">(chuckles)</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2665.84" dur="2.88">And that's true in this particular situation.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2668.72" dur="3.983">It's not coming to stay, it's coming to pass.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2673.56" dur="2.24">Now, I wanna close by this thought.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2675.8" dur="3.77">A crisis doesn't just create problems.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2679.57" dur="3.23">It often reveals them, it often reveals them.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2682.8" dur="4.563">This crisis can reveal some cracks in your marriage.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2688.77" dur="2.76">This crisis can reveal some cracks</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2691.53" dur="1.823">in your relationship to God.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2694.26" dur="5">This crisis can reveal some cracks in your lifestyle,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2699.29" dur="2.593">that you're way pushing yourself too hard.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2702.949" dur="3.181">And so be willing to let God speak to you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2706.13" dur="5">about what needs to change in your life, all right?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2711.45" dur="1.7">I want you to think about this this week,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2713.15" dur="3.44">and let me give you some practical steps, okay?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2716.59" dur="2.47">Practical steps, number one, I want you</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2719.06" dur="5">to encourage somebody else to listen to this message.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2724.55" dur="1.25">Will you do that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2725.8" dur="3.603">Will you pass this link on and send it to a friend?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2729.403" dur="3.337">If this has encouraged you, pass it on,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2732.74" dur="2.3">and be an encourager this week.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2735.04" dur="4.84">Everybody around you needs encouragement during this crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2739.88" dur="1.779">So send 'em a link.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2741.659" dur="5">Two weeks ago when we had church in our campuses,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2747.52" dur="3.11">at Lake Forest and all of our other campuses of Saddleback,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2750.63" dur="3.53">about 30,000 people showed up at church.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2754.16" dur="4.14">But this last week when we had to cancel services</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2758.3" dur="1.87">and we all had to watch online, I said,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2760.17" dur="3.38">everybody go to your small group and invite your neighbors</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2763.55" dur="2.94">and invite your friends to your small group,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2766.49" dur="0.95">we had 181,000</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2767.44" dur="5">ISPs of our homes connected into the service.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2776.3" dur="3.41">That means maybe a half a million people</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2779.71" dur="1.96">watched last week's message.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2781.67" dur="3.04">A half a million people or more.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2784.71" dur="3.63">Why, because you told somebody else to watch.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2788.34" dur="4.56">And I wanna encourage you to be a witness of good news</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2792.9" dur="2.79">this week in a world that desperately needs good news.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2795.69" dur="1.4">People need to hear this.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2797.09" dur="1.18">Send a link.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2798.27" dur="5">I believe we could encourage a million people this week</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2803.29" dur="3.8">if we would all pass on the message, okay?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2807.09" dur="3.16">Number two, if you're in a small group, we're not gonna</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2810.25" dur="3.45">be able to meet, at least this month, that's for sure.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2813.7" dur="3.95">And so I would encourage you to set up a virtual meeting.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2817.65" dur="1.79">You can have an online group.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2819.44" dur="0.97">How do you do that?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2820.41" dur="2.63">Well, there are products out there like Zoom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2823.04" dur="2.52">You want to check that out, Zoom, it's free.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2825.56" dur="2.56">And you can get on there and tell everybody to get Zoom</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2828.12" dur="1.74">on their phone or on their computer,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2829.86" dur="3.58">and you can connect six or eight or 10 people,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2833.44" dur="3.15">and you can have your group this week on Zoom.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2836.59" dur="3.19">And you can see each other face, like Facebook Live,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2839.78" dur="2.933">or it's like some of the others, you know,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2844.84" dur="5">what's on the iPhone when you look at FaceTime.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2850.12" dur="1.82">Well, you can't do that with a big group,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2851.94" dur="2.39">but you can do it with one person.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2854.33" dur="3.52">And so encourage each other face to face through technology.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2857.85" dur="2.66">We now have technology that was not available.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2860.51" dur="3.59">So check out Zoom for a small group virtual group.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2864.1" dur="1.17">And actually here online</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2865.27" dur="1.85">you can get some information, too.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2867.12" dur="3.244">Number three, if you're not in a small group,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2870.364" dur="4.096">I'll help you get into an online group this week, I will.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2874.46" dur="2.33">All you need to do is email me,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2876.79" dur="3.225">PastorRick@saddleback.com.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2880.015" dur="4.815">PastorRick@saddleback, one-word, S-A-D-D-L-E-B-A-C-K,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2884.83" dur="2.81">saddleback.com, and I'll get you connected</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2887.64" dur="2.57">to an online group, all right?</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2890.21" dur="2.79">Then make sure if you're a part of Saddleback Church</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2893" dur="2.84">to read your daily newsletter that I'm sending out</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2895.84" dur="2.03">every day during this crisis.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2897.87" dur="2.1">It's called "Saddleback at Home."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2899.97" dur="3.5">It's got tips, it's got encouraging messages,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2903.47" dur="2.14">it's got news that you can use.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2905.61" dur="1.56">A very practical thing.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2907.17" dur="2.17">We wanna stay in touch with you every day.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2909.34" dur="1.32">Get "Saddleback at Home."</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2910.66" dur="2.69">If I don't have your email address,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2913.35" dur="1.42">then you're not getting it.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2914.77" dur="2.46">And you can email me your email address</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2917.23" dur="4.41">to PastorRick@saddleback.com, and I'll put you on the list,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2921.64" dur="2.37">and you'll get the daily connection,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2924.01" dur="3.76">the daily "Saddleback in the Home" newsletter.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2927.77" dur="2.09">I just wanna close before I pray</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2929.86" dur="2.15">by saying again how much I love you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2932.01" dur="1.72">I've been praying for you every day,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2933.73" dur="1.9">and I'm gonna keep on praying for you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2935.63" dur="2.68">We will get through this together.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2938.31" dur="2.33">This is not the end of the story.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2940.64" dur="3.4">God is still on his throne, and God is gonna use this</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2944.04" dur="4.16">to grow your faith, to bring people to faith.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2948.2" dur="1.8">And who knows what's gonna happen.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2950" dur="3.07">We could have a spiritual revival out of all this</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2953.07" dur="2.66">because people often turn to God</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2955.73" dur="1.87">when they're going through tough times.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2957.6" dur="1.09">Let me pray for you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2958.69" dur="1.66">Father, I want to thank you for everybody</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2960.35" dur="1.48">who's listening right now.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2961.83" dur="5">May we live the message of James chapter one,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2967.39" dur="2.78">the first six or seven verses.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2970.17" dur="4.25">May we learn that problems come, they're gonna happen,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2974.42" dur="5">they're variable, they're purposeful, and that you're gonna</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2979.81" dur="2.41">use them for good in our lives if we'll trust you.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2982.22" dur="1.49">Help us to not doubt.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2983.71" dur="4">Help us to rejoice, to request, Lord,</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2987.71" dur="3.53">and to remember your promises.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2991.24" dur="3.45">And I pray for everybody that they'll have a healthy week.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2994.69" dur="2.87">In Jesus' name, amen.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2997.56" dur="1.07">God bless you, everybody.</text>
<text sub="clublinks" start="2998.63" dur="1.823">Pass this onto somebody else.</text>
